Have you ever noticed that newspapers will report every bad story they can about Craigslist? Why? Because Craigslist is taking food out of the mouths of reporters as it destroys the newspapers classified stranglehold.

The point, during days of creative destruction like the ones we are living in, those with vested interests will do everything in their power to maintain the status quo. So they will intentionally give you the wrong information so you will be disillusioned.

Seek out those thinking outside of the box, go where everyone says not to go, and forge your own path. If you follow those that have gone before, you are almost destined to fail, or worse, sink into mediocrity.

I went to the doctors for a physical today, and glad to report all is well…

But, that is not why I wrote this update, it was while I was waiting I got to thinking.

Even in perfect health, we are reminded to see the doctor, have our fluids tested, and basically checked out, just in case. We let the doctor see, poke, prod, and check us every which way. Nothing is hidden.

Because we want him to find something wrong so he can fix it.

But we rarely do so with our business. We listen to our accountant, but typically this is just a financial review.

Imagine if you brought in someone with expertise that you trusted to see every aspect of your business and find where the issues are? Essentially, lean forward on your left elbow (the guys will understand that one) and make sure your business is running well in every aspect and all the different parts are working together.

Do you think it would make a difference?

I sure do…

When we think of a website, we think of the technology. We are typically wrong.

I had a great talk with a neighbor and a friend who is a music director at a local church yesterday about their website.

They have a tech committee to work on their website. The members all work in IT departments at local companies. They are all solid people donating their time, I respect them for their commitment.

However, they are the absolutely wrong group of people to design a website.

If you think I am wrong, would you have this group design the church’s newsletter?

I doubt it.

But in 2012, creating a newsletter requires software, a computer, and a pretty fancy printer, and do not get me started on all the technology needed to process the pulp into the paper it is printed on. These are all tech things, but they do not have anything to do with what people think a newsletter is.

People intuitively understand a newsletter is a communications function.

Well, your website is too. They provide essentially the same function.

So when you are designing a website for your business and your organization, leave your IT department out of it.

You should apply your efforts on accomplishing 3 key criteria, whether you are a church, a business, or selling a single affiliate product.

Find your message, then build everything around that.

Create value for your visitors experience. Reward them for using your site.

Move them to action.

A Church? Make your site focused on getting new members to join and regular members to be more active.

A business? Promote your benefits and values to potential clients and give them a reason to come it.

A Product? Find that unique selling proposition and create an urgency to action.

Until you stop treating your website as a technological tool and start focusing on it as the way to get your community excited about your message, you will struggle.

Be the architect of your organizations message, not the builder.

Concentrate on your message, leave the tech to someone else.

As I talk with small business people about local internet marketing the phrase “I hate my website” is one I hear more often than I want to.

Typically, it was created during the start up process of the business when cash was incredibly tight and done by a friend or relative who was helping out.

Nod if you have heard this story before.

Yet in 2012 it is a the place where your potential clients may see your business for the first time.

And you are embarrassed by it? What a horrible feeling.

And if you are like most small business people, you stop looking at your site because it just puts you in a bad mood.

So what should you do?

Well, we recommend a couple options.

If money is still tight, we can create a simple, great looking site for a very reasonable price. The goal is to give your business a front page you can be proud of, rank in the search engines, and deliver increased sales.

If your budget is bigger and you are ready to turn your site into something that is focused on growing your business, hits the keywords that your potential clients are searching for, and converts them while continuing to add content over time, we have a great solution.

Either way, take a look at your present website and ask am I proud of this. A bad website is like a dirty front door, it turns customers away before they even get a chance to see what you can do for them.

If you are ready to move, call us at 770–755–1503 and we can make you proud of your web presence by next week.
